Shilajit Explained

What it is, how it works, and why this ancient substance has become a modern men’s wellness ingredient

Shilajit may be one of the oldest ingredients to become a new wellness trend.

For centuries, it has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a substance associated with strength, rejuvenation, and vitality. Today, it is increasingly appearing in men’s health and performance formulas, with particular interest around testosterone, energy, and physical performance.

And unlike many familiar supplement ingredients, Shilajit doesn’t come from a fruit, herb, or root.

It forms naturally within mountainous rock. Over long periods of time, plant material and other organic matter are gradually transformed within layers of rock, creating a dark, mineral-rich substance that can emerge from mountain crevices during warmer months.

Its unusual origin is part of what has made Shilajit so fascinating for centuries.

But today, there’s another reason for the renewed interest: modern science is beginning to explore some of the same areas of male health for which Shilajit has traditionally been valued.

What’s Actually Inside Shilajit?

Shilajit isn’t one isolated nutrient.

It’s a naturally occurring mixture of organic compounds and trace minerals. Among its best-known components are fulvic substances, particularly fulvic acid, which contribute to Shilajit’s distinctive composition.

This makes Shilajit fundamentally different from other single defined nutrient. Instead, you’re getting a complex natural material containing multiple compounds.

And that’s part of what makes Shilajit interesting from a formulation perspective. Rather than functioning like a stimulant that produces a short-lived spike in energy, Shilajit is used as a longer-term vitality ingredient designed to support underlying physiological processes.

Shilajit and Testosterone

This is where Shilajit has attracted perhaps the most attention in men’s wellness.

Testosterone influences far more than sexual health. It plays an important role in muscle, strength, bone health, body composition, energy, and overall male function.

And human research has found a connection between purified Shilajit supplementation and testosterone.

In a placebo-controlled clinical study of healthy men aged 45–55, taking purified Shilajit for 90 days was associated with higher total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHEAS compared with placebo [1].

Shilajit has also been studied in male reproductive health, with research reporting improvements in testosterone and several sperm parameters following supplementation [2].

This makes Shilajit particularly interesting as part of a broader approach to male vitality, not simply as an ingredient associated with how men feel, but one that has been studied in relation to measurable aspects of male physiology.

Energy Without the Stimulant

“Energy” is another word that follows Shilajit everywhere.

But Shilajit isn’t caffeine.

It doesn’t rely on stimulating the nervous system to create a temporary feeling of alertness. Instead, interest in Shilajit has extended to the processes involved in cellular energy and physical function.

That distinction matters.

There’s a difference between temporarily making yourself feel more awake and supporting the systems the body relies on to perform.

This is why Shilajit fits particularly well into the broader idea of vitality. The goal isn’t a short-lived boost followed by a crash. It’s supporting the body’s capacity for energy, performance, and resilience over time.

Shilajit and Physical Performance

Shilajit has also been studied in active men.

In one eight-week study, men taking Shilajit were better able to maintain muscular strength following a fatiguing exercise protocol [3].

Other research has looked at Shilajit’s relationship with collagen-related processes in men who regularly strength trained [4]. Collagen is an important structural protein found throughout the musculoskeletal system, including tendons and bone.

It isn’t simply a testosterone ingredient. Its potential relevance spans hormonal health, physical performance, cellular function, and overall vitality areas that naturally overlap in the way men actually experience health and performance.

Why We Chose Shilajit for Peak Vitality

When we developed Peak Vitality, we wanted to build around a broader idea of male vitality.

Healthy testosterone matters, but so do energy, physical performance, resilience, and the ability to continue performing consistently over time.

That’s where Shilajit made sense.

Peak Vitality combines Shilajit with Tongkat Ali, Ashwagandha, Zinc, Boron, DIM, and other targeted nutrients to support male hormonal health, strength, drive, and daily vitality.*

Rather than relying on one ingredient to do everything, the formula brings together ingredients with complementary roles.

Shilajit adds something particularly interesting to that system because its relevance isn’t limited to one pathway. Its research spans testosterone, male reproductive health, muscular performance, and other aspects of male physiology.

And that makes it a natural fit for a formula designed around vitality rather than a temporary boost.

The Takeaway

Shilajit’s recent popularity may make it look like another new supplement trend.

It isn’t.

Its roots stretch back centuries, while modern research is now giving us a clearer understanding of why this unusual natural substance has remained associated with male strength and vitality for so long.

From testosterone and male health to physical performance and cellular function, Shilajit occupies a unique position between traditional wellness and modern performance science.

And perhaps that’s the most interesting thing about it.

An ingredient that has been used for generations is finding an entirely new audience, not because the story around it has changed, but because we’re beginning to understand more about the biology behind it.
